There are 66 Iridium satellites 800 kilometers above the earth providing global coverage. These satellites incorporate a special short burst data system that is perfect for sending and receiving text messages. The same system is used for drone control, tsunami warnings and aircraft navigation and is certified as 99.999% reliable.
Even though you are at 30,000 feet flying at 900 kilometres per hour, it’s very fast. There may be occasions where to locate a satellite it will take a little longer, but you won’t notice it.
As soon as your messages hit the ground, they are relayed in real-time via the normal Internet, SMS, and Email to your contacts. Your contacts use their normal phone SMS service and apps to receive and reply. Regardless of whether you send a text or not, the aircraft checks the ground every minute for replies, so you won’t miss a message. When your contacts respond, their Telco will deliver the reply in real-time to us for satellite uplink. Just like all free social networks, do not assume everyone will respond immediately.
Every message sent inflight has your unique inflight satellite ID. A 10 digit number for SMS, or a dedicated Chat Thread for WhatsApp, or an inflight email address.
On the ground finding you is not a problem for your Telco and Internet provider as they track your every move. In order to find you inflight we must track every aircraft. Once you open your free messaging app, it registers that you are on that aircraft, so now we know where to send your messages.
When your friends or family receive a message, they also recognize from the unique ID it’s from you “inflight”. If they just replied to your normal SMS number or WhatsApp, as you are disconnected from your Telco, you would only get it once the aircraft has landed. When your contacts reply to your app message, it returns directly to our satellite network for upload to aircraft and routed to your inflight app.
No, you can send as many messages as you like, and your contacts do not need the app to receive them. Once on the ground they arrive on their mobile device as an SMS, WhatsApp or Email.
Yes, after you switch to flight mode, when you first open the app it, it will ask for permission to connect you via Bluetooth, which you need to accept to use the app.
No, the app connects via Bluetooth automaticity as it’s the new Bluetooth 5.
We use the latest Bluetooth 5 as it’s very fast and documented and tested as safe to use in aircraft. It allows us to connect every passenger on board.
No, while mobile devices create very beautiful pictures, the file sizes are huge. Pictures are something we are looking to develop but not currently an option. The system automatically removes any picture or video clips so as not to delay the messages.
No. the only information we retain in the system is your contact numbers linked to your inflight satellite ID, so we know who you are. We need this to route messages to you inflight.
No, the network is encrypted and acts purely as relay service. It does not store any messages or private data. This is an opt-in service only.
All you need to do is select opt out and your contact details will be removed. Then delete the app or clear all messages, the decision is yours.
This is an exclusive virtual private invite only satellite messaging service. Only you and your invited contacts can access the system. All modern social networks run on “invite only” to eliminate spammers and junk mail.
